The reason why you wont find Star Wars in D6 is that the license passed on from West End Games to Wizards of the Coast who released the game in D20 system. You can still find the D6 game on sale used online like at Amazon.com here. If you want to try another system there's a free pdf conversion to the Savage Worlds system here or the RISUS system here. The D20 (the current version is called the Saga Edition) game can be found easily at bookstores now.

Have you role-played before with another game, Greschner?

I think they both have strengths and weaknesses. All in all, I'm a Saga Edition fan. All the way! But D6 was pretty fun, though.

Yup, the D6 system was developed at a time when STAR WARS wasn't as hyped as it is now. It was made by fans, for fans. Wizard of the Coast just bought the rights - because they're practically the Microsoft of the RPG-world - and slapped the D20 system on it.

Heh, maybe I'm ranting. I just don't really like WotC, that's all, or any big companies engaged in monopolies.

You need 2 people minimum. One person, the gamemaster or GM plans the storyline. The other(s) live out their lives within the storyline the GM has created.

It's like the GM is the writer of the screenplay and the director of a movie, and writes lines and directs the actions and dialogue of everyone EXCEPT the main characters (The players.) Those players are in complete control of their own character's actions, and can affect the outcome of the story based on what they do...or don't do.

I'm the GM of my current D6 game, set in the midst of the clone wars. My initial storyline was to revolve around my 6 players who were all Jedi padawans who lost masters in the area of Geonosis. They were sent to find an old 'retired' jedi who could complete their training, since most jedi were now caught up in the war.

Four of those padawans have since died or turned to the darkside. The remaining two have passed their trials to become Jedi Knights. The other players have made new characters: a Republic Cruiser captain who shuttles the others around the galaxy, a clone jet trooper sergeant, and a clone scout trooper, and we've recently added a new player who has decided to be a clone engineer.

great thanks dred, now do you play this game in RL in person or can you like play it over the internet chating or soemthing, cuz i only know 1 person in RL that would like SW enough to play with me ( hah).

This is a picture of my last D6 group of characters. And we played over IRC using a Dicebot to roll our dice. So yes, you can play live with everyone online.

Or you could try using the Galaxy Games Online application with a built in chat, dice rolling, character sheet building program. Here are some custom character sheets and dice rolling macros I made for GGO.

Haha! Awesome! I think I might have to finish of the group picture that I started so long ago! I've just been looking at the old Yahoo group page, everything is still there! :D

I love the group picture by Jorrigun! The group looks like it must have been a lot of fun - my favorite is "Gand: Female Gand". I'm actually working on a similar picture (in a toon style) of mine and Drig's first-ever group, from our first-ever Star Wars campaign.
So far I've drawn one of the characters, and I'm working on the others.

Jace,

Just to be fair, Saga edition was largely developed by Rodney "Moridin" Thompson, who has run swrpgnetwork for YEARS (which btw helped start SWAG in some regards). So I think it's a bit unfair to snub WotC and D20 just cause it's not D6. Many of us consider D20 (especially Saga edition) to be QUITE superior in many ways. Plus Saga has a lot of things built in that make playing it pretty much as fast as playing d6. MUCH work has gone into making it a better, simpler system, and I think what we have today is quite well done.

With that in mind, I won't argue that WotC's in a bit of a monopoly position, but as long as they don't abuse that (which price wise I think you'd have a hard time arguing that they do) they're really the best group for the job, and the product we have to play with is really fabulous. PLUS, to be fair, West End Games was in essentially the exact same position when the SW license was awarded to them. They were in MANY ways top of the game company heap at that moment in history.

Our group has really enjoyed SAGA, although the core rule book is chronically badly edited. You really need a copy of the errata if you're going to play it.

Honestly, though, we've found that roleplaying Star Wars runs most smoothly if you don't have any rules at all. As long as you have a competent DM to run the thing and mature players who won't try to be the king of awesome all the time, it works really well and is the best way to get a really fast, dramatic game going. You know you're doing Star Wars properly when two members of the group get up and start having a lightsaber duel with rulers and sound effects to demonstrate their actions to the DM. If you can't get enough people who want to play along in real life, it's also by far the smoothest way to run a game online.

Generally it's worth keeping some dice on hand anyway, since every so often there will be an event which simply has to be determined by random chance, but you can get a really fast-paced and fun game without having to teach everyone a load of rules.

I have played both, but still prefer old-school D6. Simple to learn, not a ton of 'rules' and very fast play... all in the Star Wars tradition.

That aside, playing as part of "Team: Sabredart" was an absolute blast. I was just looking... we started that in November of 2003, and it kinda fell apart in Jan-Feb 2005. Maybe it is time to dust off the boots, put new batteries in the lightsaber, and kick some Imperial backside again!
