The Clone Wars series

Continuing on from this thread which talks about the movie a.k.a. pilot episode...

I like the first two episodes! Both can be easily converted into actual RPG scenarios. Also, the first episode "Ambush" had the awesome-crazy Yoda last seen in Empire Strikes Back. He has a great sense of humor while tackling problems, but at the same time he takes care of his clone trooper escorts very well. The second episode "Rising Malevolence" takes place in Tim Zahn's Heir To The Empire location: the Abregado system. Again, Plo Koon's relationship with Wolff's clone troops is portrayed well. ("I don't believe anyone will come looking for us. We're just clones."), and the Separatist B1 droids manning the pod hunter show us what a bunch of sociopaths they really are... not just goofy.

I'm coming to the conclusion that their goofiness, as well as the sociopathy, is the product of being quickly mass-produced with lots of droid brain defects and not going through their periodical memory wipes.

Today, continuing the Malevolence story arc... we will see recently out of the oven, freshly baked Koensayr BTL Y-Wings! Yay!

I think the series is credible: it's entertaining and funny, and I adore the little character portraits we keep seeing, such as crazy-Yoda and his clone troops. That was really lovely.

I hope it starts going somewhere, though: so far in 40 minutes of screen time, nothing has actually happened.

So, anyone catch last week's episode? A return to Geonosis, and the most brutal battle scenes ever to grace Cartoon Network.

1. An actual battle plan being implemented and showed onscreen, instead of the fracas at the end of AOTC where if we remove Obi-Wan, Anakin and Padme's scenes, it's just the Republic coming in from the right of the screen and the Separatists from the left, and they shoot the crap out of each other. And we did not actually see a resolution of the battle on screen.

2. More Y-Wing action, showing them in several bombing run scenes.

3. Is this on Cartoon Network? *checks channel* I don't remember seeing lots of living sapient creatures running and burned alive, while being picked off by guns and then falling to their deaths? Certainly not on, say... Codename: Kids Next Door or Ed, Edd and Eddie.

4. The reappearance of troopers Boil & Waxer from the Ryloth campaign, who helped the little lost Twi'lek girl Numa. This time Boil has a cute little painting of Numa on the side of his helmet. How sweet... and ultimately depressing considering what happens after Order 66.

More! More, I say!

bellatendris

I am so going to have to go watch it again to look for the painting on Boil's helmet!!

Sorry if this gets formatted funny, I'm using my new phone while sitting in the waiting room for the doc. My brain is in our beloved GFFA, but the body is stuck here.

Am I the only who loved Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars? I want more 2D Clone Wars pimpness!

I like them both and I can not wait to see Barriss Offee in action in the upcoming episode. The 2D was good but the 3D gives it that little extra kick. I think it is all cool.

I think the two series are two different sort of animals, in terms of storytelling formats. In fact, Tartakovsky's Clone Wars itself has two different formats in itself, allowing for different sort of stories to be told.

First there was the series of vignettes that is told in 20 part 3-5 minute chapters. After that there's the story told in 5 chapters, but the first chapter picks up from the previous microepisode before jumping almost 3 years to the future, where the story continues til the end.

The current Clone Wars series is told in standard 22 minute episodes, allowing the producers to tell more conventional stories in episodes, but they still try to push the envelope by writing two-part or three-part stories, and sometimes jumping back in time a whole episode to show what comes before.

Both series showcase the Star Wars universe during the Clone Wars in their own unique way. Ideally, both shows would be running simultaneously. Apart from the Rise of the Empire live action show, I hope they do a show that features the tramp freighter / Traveller / Firefly aspect of the Star Wars universe... you know, a Han Solo-type show.

Drig

The original idea for The 3D Clone Wars cartoon was to be tramp freighters during the clone wars but when they showed it to Lucas, Lucas wanted it to be more Anakin and Obi-Wan and an exploration of the Clone Wars that was not possible during the prequels. George Lucas did keep one character from that crew though, a traveling padawan Togruta named Ashla. The other crew members were a Twi'lek Jedi Master traveling the stars ala Qui-Gon, a Human Han Solo wannabe named Cad, the smugglers girl-friend named Lupe of an unknown species, and the huge strongman partner named Lunkeye of the Gungan race. The Jedi were to work with the smuggler to track down arms dealers, disrupt the Hutt clans, and on occasion participate in the Clone Wars... They were even going to have to deal with a small Huttlet named Rotta and his father Ziro...

I for one would have prefered the original but hey? The Clone Wars is pretty hot too, just bought the first season and the conecpt art book, which all this information came from.

Hope you liked the trivia!

Hisham

That's pretty interesting.

I read once somewhere that ILM also passed on the CGI models of their ships and vehicles to the toon production team, but when rendered they looked so real that they had to scrap the ILM models and build less realistic models from scratch.

How's that book, Kyle? I've been checking out all the production artwork that they display for the episodes on starwars.com... pretty outstanding. I should get that book some time.

Drig

Hahaha! I didn't hear about that... kind of self defeating of cg to have to look less realistic!

I bought it on a whim and I'm glad I did! There are a lot of great concepts in it. Lot's of insight into things, for example, they had to make a ruling on twi'lek headtails for children. Do they grow as they age? Do they have them any headtail when they are born? The ruling was when they are born they have fully formed headtails! Ouch! Pretty cool! Tons of concepts of them drawing a character and crossing it out and saying more cartoony.

Reminds very much of the Pirates of the Caribbean concept book crossed with Attack of the Clones concept book. The first season comes with a small booklet of concept art but not even close to how many pages are in the clone wars. Ive had the concept book for three days and finally finished flipping through it and only reading here and there.

Asok

That Clone Wars tramp freighter concept sounds so boss pimp. Now I will forever resent George Lucas for his need for Anakin/Obi-wan facetime. Supergay.

Also, I know Hish and I talked about this before, but c'mon! Plo Koon and Obi-wan are voiced by the same dude! And it's completely obvious! That is not what Plo Koon is supposed to sound like... I mean, just look at that face mask...

I do realy enjoy the clone wars but there continiuing disregard for established continuity is realy starting to spoil it for me, and that we have to put up with so many anakin/obi wan episodes is starting to where thin aswell. shame cause there has been some realy good episodes like the clone rookie one rocked!

bellatendris

I want that lightsaber SO bad...that thing looked amazing! For some reason though, it didn't look as well-done as the rest of the series, animation wise. Still straight up wicked cool though.

Lord Crumb

I don't know about the rest of you, but how could they fit all that is happening in the Clone Wars into a three year span. I know that WW 2 went from 1939-1945 (1941-1945 for the U.S.) and a lot happened but the Clone Wars are on a galactic scale. It is mind boggling. Also, the disregard for the already established canon is a bit tiresome.

Hehehehee, that new show was great!

Pitch Black scene, looking for droids.
Clone 1: Hey, I'm gonna check out the southern sector

"In short, the TV series in my opinion is among the best Star Wars I have seen outside of the feature films and it is much better than the animated feature. In fact there should be no worries for anyone who missed the feature film because in my opinion one does not necessarily have to be all that familiar with Star Wars in general to enjoy the show, which is suitable for adults too.

AHHHH run for your life, for its the Zillo Beast!
Huh, yeh right like a little bug can destroy the streets of coruscant...

Drig and I are worried now... has Clone Wars changed everything we know about Malastare and Dug/Gran society?? We will have to wait and see...

Boshuda

Thespian

I agree, where all the grans? Dugs lived oppressed under them, and yet they were nowhere to be seen in the Zillo Beast episodes. Speaking of which, if the Zillo Beast is placed in the Republics control, and presumably successfully cloned, then why isn't the Emperor's fleet indestructible in the original trilogy? Did he just think "Mmmm... Nah, I won't use that invincible weapon.."

I can't make myself like this series. The older one in 2D (by Genndy Tartakovsky) was absolutely brilliant. It paid respect to the characters, showed obscure Jedi (and not just as side characters to be rescued by Anakin, but actual protagonists of the episode! Shaak Ti and Ki-adi Mundi own!) and displayed epic battle scenes that, along with the crude and bluntness of the art, depicted just how brutal the War was.
Plus, I hate the exaggerated Clone accents in the 3D series. I mean, in the films the clones had a New Zealand stress on some of the words, but it's so drastic and obvious in these new episodes.
Ahsoka annoys the heck outta me too. The episodes are rgeat sometimes, for the five, six minutes of action when you might see a cool Jedi take the stage. But for the most part, it's a letdown to me.

Asok

Thespian, you have exactly summed up everything that I feel about everything. Thank you.

Man the 2nd season over. I hated that season finale, they wasted with corny R2-D2 come home nonsense.
There couldve been a 40 min. Action entertainment. Even as a kid, It was painful to watch. I was embarrassed that my friends had to watch it. Really Dissapionted, but they had a few decent ones like the hostage one and the mandalorian set. But nothing

My wife and I rented the movie/pilot when it hit dvd.....We fell asleep part way through. It's like they just wanted to show off the animation so they stuck it on a story written by some twelve-year-old somewhere. It follows the same formula as the prequels: Keep throwing new characters and locations and vehicles at the audience so they think we put more effort into it. sheeesh! And what's with everyone being a jedi anymore? When I was a kid and me and my friends played Star Wars there was always a huge fight over who got to be Han Solo. Okay, so we all wanted to be Han Solo with a lightsaber, but Han Solo none the less. The current crop of Star Wars writers and creators need to give the viewers someone to relate to. You need an everyman (or woman) in this galaxy of weirdness so that us mortal folk can slip ourselves into that reality.

GaaAAAhhhHHHH!!!!

Where my Solo at!?
