Casting call

I've got an upcoming Star Wars campaign I'm preparing. Sometimes, when I do NPCs, I give them the image and/or mannerisms of certain real-life hollywood actors. Almost as if I were casting a movie.

I'll sometimes do a sketch with that character in the likeness of the actor.

That being understood, I've got a role for an elderly jedi mentor of a group of 'orphaned' padawans (the PCs. Set at the very opening of the Clone Wars, their Jedi masters were killed in the arena on Geonosis, so this guy is taking charge of them until hey are ready for their trials.

Who would be a good casting choice for this guy?

I'm partial to:

Clint Eastwood
Ian Mckellan
Anthony Hopkins
Sean Connery
Toshiro Mifune
Morgan Freeman
or
Michael Ironside

Any ideas from this forum?

Stirzy

This may sound weird, but I've always thought Bill Cosby would make a good jedi master.

If i had to choose from thoose i would defenetly use Toshiro Mifune, but another "Samuraj" that i would use if i could choose anyone would instead be: Ken Watanabe.

I think it would be even more cool to use an alien Master though to many seem to think that a "real" Jedi is supposed to be human, i mean use Vincent from the TV-series Beuty and the Beast and you got a perfect Cathar *s*

But this is your thing and with your choices i would pick
Toshiro Mifune

I too must toss out my election of Ken Watanabe. :-) But if I have to pick from your list, it'll be Anthony Hopkins. He would make a totally wicked Jedi Master.

Honestly.. I'd love to see Sean Connery... but I'd have to agree that Anthony Hopkins would be a better choice for a "wicked Jedi Master" as Eclipse put it.

dredwulf60

Yeah Ken Watanabe would be a great choice for a Jedi, but I'm looking for someone who looks old and wizened that the players will subconsciously identify as such. (Which is another reason I'm going with human, easier to identify with...for humans.

I want him to portray a washed-up jedi even, if there ever was such a thing. One that gets chosen to 'babysit' while there is a WAR going on, and other Jedi are being Generals of Clone Battalions.

Not to say the actor is washed up, rather its a role they'd play, not unlike in a movie. (Like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven.)

:)

dredwulf60

Bill Cosby *IS* funny. At first. But you may have a point there; he's usually portrayed as funny, yet wise. I'll have to consider him too.

Travis Moore

I think I like Morgan Freeman the best from your list. But here's kind of an out there suggestion: what if it was a female jedi mentor, and you cast someone like Judi Dench or Glenn Close or Lena Olin?

ShadowWalker

Way to go mentioning a Swedish actress, id vote for Lena aswell for a female Jedi Master...

dredwulf60

Whoa, Lena is WAY too hot for this purpose.

Glenn close: possibility

Judi Dench: might actually work well, but I think i'm trying to make a stereotype work FOR me, rather than go against stereotype with a woman. (back to the reason for using a human.)

I can thrash stereotypes later on in the game. :)

The discussion is very helpful though.

If you can do the voice. Morgan Freeman is WAY my choice. He so pimp. If not then Clint Eastwood. He's easy to imitate.

Xanamiar

I have an idea.... Vincent Price. He would fit your Older wise man, and your stay at home, kind of guy.

murratekal

Vincent Price is too creepy to be a good mentor to the young Jedi. He just doesn't carry the air of someone that would be watching over young Jedi with a careful eye. I think that the young Jedi would run from him, not to him. Other then that, he has the whole wizened and elderly feel to him. My choice? I'd go with Morgan Freeman.

dredwulf60

I'm becoming pretty partial to Morgan Freeman; specifically from his 'God' roll in Bruce/Evan Almighty. The subtle wisdom is inherent.

However, Vincent Price is VERY cool. Hadn't even thought of him. I'm totally earmarking him for an appearance later on as a Rogue Jedi, possibly a former instructor at the Jedi Temple that one or two of the players had dealings with as novices. He'd be gently turning others to the Dark side, a la Count Dooku in AoTC.

:D

Xanamiar

Excellent idea dred... Vincent Price does give off that kind of personality...

"Join me in the Dark Side, or suffer the consequences..."

Xanamiar

I came up with the PERFECT actor for the role of an old jedi master...

Donald Sutherland.. He looks the part, and he has that old time charm about him, like a good ole grandfather.

Xanamiar

He's one of those actors that I"ve always liked... I went and watched "The Italian Job" Because of him being in it... was a bit disappointed when they killed him off to start with... But still liked the movie... But I saw The Italian Job on my desk, and thought he'd make an AWESOME Jedi Master.

dredwulf60

Yeah, Mako was a bit of a legend. My personal favorite role for him was the wizard in Conan the Barbarian!

dredwulf60

I had no idea that guy had such an impressive resume. I only really know him from American Ninja and the TV show 'The Master'.

CCR

If it were a movie it would probably star Clint Eastwood as the embittered, grizzled master Jedi, who at first cold to his unwanted young charges eventually relearns how to love.

Gith

Hey, this is a fun thread.

Clint Eastwood sounds a tad too intense as a "washed-out Jedi" sort of?

How about, Kwai Chang Whatshisface, from Kung Fu... or more recently... Bill from Kill Bill? Flawed and well past his glory days, but ya know he's a cool cat.

- Just another ghost in the holocron.

Velovich

Coming into this late, but I once used Avery Brooks for a Jedi that was more philosophical and mentorish. If you like, a Buhddist Jedi.

His cadence and voice aren't too hard to copy and some of his dialogues on Deep Space 9, where he got excited, or was angry and trying to make a point, he was fun to play when my players wanted advice.

This is Star Wars we're talking about! Quoth George Lucas, "Faster! More intense!" lol

dredwulf60

Ah Ghost, you refer to David Carradine. I'd have a mutiny. Most of my players have a distinct DISLIKE for David Carradine. lol.

I'm really thinking I'm going to go with Clint AND Morgan Freeman. I like them both for the part, and I can't get their synnergy out of my head from 'Unforgiven'.

Clint will be the hard nosed codger...a Jedi who was great once, but became embittered...for reasons I've yet to work out.

Freeman will be an old Jedi ally from the 'glory days' who has been content to serve as a custodian of data and artifacs at the Jedi temple. Since the separatist uprisings, the Jedi are known to be overwhelmed. With the sudden onset of the Clone Wars, these two Jedi are called up to serve a more active role.

I plan on having a Sir Anthony Hopkins -inspired Jedi character appear later-on. One who has a history of animosity toward the Clint character, and feels that he should be retired from the Order. Their interactions will be an eye-opener for my young padawan players, who will idealistically and naively have come to believe that the Jedi order is free from such petty personal conflicts.

The Vincent Price ex-Jedi is going to become my 'Phantom Menace' so to speak. The seemingly neutral yet sympathetic character that shows up to help get the players out of poodoo from time to time, but is actually a toady of Count Dooku.
