This is a character that's been knocking around in my head for a while. I've been fascinated with the idea of the Old Republic's Senate Guard ever since I read story arc "Honor and Duty" in Star Wars: Republic. Mostly, I've wondered how the Guard would have to adapt themselves as a highly mobile bodyguard force during the Clone Wars. Instead of staying largely around the Senate, the Guards would have to follow Senators and delegates around a hostile galaxy on diplomatic and fact finding missions. They'd have to be less ceremonial and more practical.

I'm imagining a simple full body or torso up portrait, no background (I'm not too demanding). Just a dynamic pose like aiming a blaster. I'm providing a character background and description below, but I want to dwell a little on how I imagine the armor. Basically, it's just a blend of the Senate Guard's duty uniform (as seen in "Honor and Duty) and the armor of the Naboo security guards from Ep. I (I can prove example pics). A fusion of elegant and practical. Of course, I'm not adverse to artist innovation.

Background

Jaek Kerris is a lieutenant in the Senate Guard. This is not a statement of occupation, but a statement of purpose. His father wore the Blue, as did his father's father and so on for the past seven generations. When he was ten years old Jaek was sent to the military academy world of Cardia to begin his education and training. At the age of 18 he graduated with top honors and returned home to Coruscant. There, as per family tradition, he signed a three year hitch with the Judicial Department to gain 'practical skills'. At the age of 21 he finally entered into the Senate Guard Academy on Coruscant. Two years later he again graduated at the top of his class and quickly earned his commission.

The Clone Wars broke out when Jaek was 25. Because of his stellar record and military background Jaek was selected to accompany Senators and delegates on high risk diplomatic missions. Lieutenant Kerris is often tasked with providing security and bodyguard duties for his charges in active theaters of war. Besides the constant perils of the battlefield Jaek has thwarted kidnappers, assassins, and even repelled a Separatist bordering parties with the aid of Clone Troopers.

Personality

Jaek was raised to respect the Republic and democracy above all else. To serve the Republic is to serve the common good and preserve law and order. His childhood education on Cardia has instilled a strong sense of discipline and duty in Jaek. He is very much a 'spit and polish' soldier, taking great pains to maintain his uniform, armor, and kit even in miserable battlefield conditions. This is not out of vanity, but the belief that as a Senate Guard he must always present the ideal face of the Republic.

Since becoming an active member of the Guard Jaek has become somewhat disillusioned with the virtue of Senators and the democratic process. The Republic is in decline and corruption and inefficient bureaucracy are rampant. Rather than becoming cynical or corrupted himself, Jaek has become more resolved in his convictions. If the leaders of the Republic are lack, then it is the duty of public servants such as himself maintain the honor of the Republic.

Appearance

Jaek is a tall, athletically built human male in his mid-twenties. He has olive colored skin, brown almond shaped eyes, and dark close cropped hair. Since leaving Coruscant Jaek has abandoned his ceremonial robes and headdress for more practical and protective armor and fatigues. Drawing from his time on Cardia, Jaek has crafted a de facto field uniform for Senate Guards incorporating the standard Guard duty helmet, shoulder pauldrons, and the body armor of the Naboo security forces. Jaek has also incorporated design elements from clone trooper armor.

I don't want to be seen as impatient or a bumper, but I just got this character accepted into a play-by-post game and it sure we be swell to have an illustration of him.

Just a thought here... I think your request is so detailed that you are scaring off a lot of artists. Artists like to have some artistic expression, but you've layed out every single detail including the background.

I believe Eclipse post about requests says something along the lines of details are good, but if you get to detailed you take away any real artistic expression to it, the artist has to be able to make the art theirs. You've kinda limited any kind of personal expression that can go into it.

Might be the reason it still hasn't been picked up, but you never know when someone will see it and think. Eh, why not!...

browwiw

Well, ain't that the paradox? I see tons of requests with replies like "you haven't posted enough detail, how does that help the artist?" So, I post a request with vivid detail of my mental image and now I have posted *too much* detail. I seriously can't win.

Xanamiar

Well you have that, and then you have the fact that it's a male human, which we see a lot of anyway... You're right, you can't win, sometimes... But you never know when someone might pick it up because they just happen to see it.. But no reason to continue to bump it to the top. If it doesn't get picked up, try again some other time. Patience is key around here, without it, an artist can't get anything done.

I'm interested in this. Is there still desire?

Please send me the reference pics. (specifically the senate guard duty uniform mentioned.)

browwiw

Oh, wow, I had actually given up! I only checked this board on a whim!

I'll send you the pics ASAP, dredwulf. Thanks for considering my request. I hope too much time hasn't passed.

The big silvery Senate Guard ceremonial rifle, if you please. It's more iconic. Do you need me to hunt you up a pic?

dredwulf60

I know the one you mean. I will see what I can do. So far my sketch is working really well with a pistol, so I hope you won't be terribly disappointed if that's the end result. I thought of the ceremonial rifle, but all the writing I've read on it suggests it's not a very practical weapon, and your description seemed more about practicality. :)

browwiw

You know, I went back in forth in my head about if Jaek would actually carry the ceremonial rifle into battle or not. It wouldn't be optimal, but for illustration purposes I figured it'd look better.

Ultimately, you're the artist so you do what you think looks best. If you have any more questions, just shoot them to me at the email addy I gave you. We'll communicate a lot quicker that way.
