I'm a curious person so I thought I'd ask everyone a question.

What/Who brought you to SWAGONline? Where did you learn about SWAGOnline?

And last question...

Do you tell your friends about SWAGOnline?

Lord Crumb

I was looking at Star Wars artwork online and the web search listed this site and I've been here ever since.

Xanamiar

Awesome.. You've added a lot to the site Lord Crumb... a lot of requests and comments on requests as well as comments on the art. It's good to have you around :)

Drig

I was looking for pictures of dugs on google image search. I stumbled across swag when it had just about formed from a forum post on the Holonet. I bookmarked it immediately and didn't return till two days later when I noticed the free request section. I remember being so excited that people woul draw MY character. I posted my request and immediately called asok. He promptly joined and posted his character for a request.

I was sorely disappointed when Asoks request was claimed almost instantly by hisham. Asok and I were I think 14 at the time and we talked about at school the next day and when I got home I plugged in my dial up Internet and viola! Tracy heart picked up my first request.

Asok and I were hooked after that. I don't remember when we applied to be an artist but I remember thinking I wasn't good enough. Asok applied and got rejected for bad scans and reapplied after he figured out a better way to scan his images. I got rejected at first too I think but for reasons I don't remember. To make a long story short, I've been here ever since.

Xanamiar

That's Awesome Drig... things I didn't know :)

You've been a great contributer to the site ever since you joined. Your work is great... Glad to have both you and your friend Asok. :)

And just so everyone knows my story....

I was roleplaying on StarWars Galaxies website ((15 years ago?)) anyway... waiting for the game to come out. Was referred here by someone to look for images, or request an image. Unfortunately, I joined after the request forum was shut down for lack of interest at the time. I continued to check the site til it closed down for a short period. Then when I heard it came back up. I came back... (and my memory is a bit sketchy on some details.. that's showing my age :) )

I've been around since SWAG was part of the Holonet, before it had it's own website. Loved the concept and I've stuck around ever since. I've told a few friends in my gaming groups about it, but only one visits regularly; the rest, if they have a request, forward it to me and have me post it.

Xanamiar

You're the quiet stalker type aren't you seghast?... Always here.. but hardly ever speak :) ...

Nice to hear you've been around that long.. one of the few...

Hisham

I helped create SWAG. Not one of the big bosses mind you, like Bob or Derek or Chris, but I was in the council when we transferred over our artwork from the Holonet Forums and the site went live.

Rina

I got drawn here because of Tusserk, after being invited into the campaign she and my man have been playing for ages, and i got instantly attached to my character XD I figured it would be an easy way to share artwork from our sessions and also mill around with folk who dig the universe as much as i have come to

Seghast

I've found that if I speak too much, my words either get misconstrued and I end up being painted as something I'm not, or they inadvertently upset someone and cause drama. Neither sincerity nor sarcasm seems to translate well over the web.

Heh, I found this place through the good old internets... drawing a lot for our home game, and in the early days my SW knowledge was preeeetty small. Noticed that a lot of the images I checked back on for reference seemed to come from this 'swagonline.com' place, but it took me surprisingly long to actually check out the site itself!

Poked around quietly for a bit, finally figured I could try my hand at applying, and you've all been around for the rest!

All my gaming group knows about this place, and a few other art buddies, but to be honest I don't take it much further than that. I'm just barely getting the 'outside world' accustomed to the fact that 'sometimes I draw Star Wars stuff', but I work with a tough crowd in that regard and deal with a lot of rather, aheh, outdated views of geeky stuff in general. Baby steps, baby steps, one day they'll know that one of my most satisfying hobbies is sitting around a table rolling dice and pretending to be a space wolf.

I had been browsing the internet for Star Wars artwork for a RPG tabletop that I was running. Being a fledgling artist myself along with my love of all things Star Wars, I lurked for quite awhile before I took a leap of faith and applied. I honestly didn't think I would get accepted as I didn't think I was good enough. Well here I am many years later still putting out artwork and expanding as an artist.

An interesting note about me and SWAG; I've never made a request for artwork. I'm not sure why I've never made a request myself, just never thought about it I guess.

Asok

I think Drig spoke well enough for the both of us. We came here when we were in high school, in summer of 2002, I believe... Right after the site went live for the first time. I'm still amazed he found it way back then.

We made quite a few requests - my first got picked up by Hish, then another by Jawa Stu, so I tend to view these guys as old compatriots. They were there for me way back when. And I can't say enough about how much Hish has done for me. Over the years, he's vouched for me, given me advice, and even hooked me up with real, paying work in the industry. That's just crazy!

In the old days, Reverend Strone was still active around here, and with a little digging, Drig found out he was actually Daniel Falconer - Weta employee and legit concept artist responsible for a slew of designs in the LOTR films. Amazingly, he and I had a regular correspondence, and he gave me a ton of pointers about style and technique, and I've been more or less emulating him ever since.

Sometimes I think back to those days when Swag was a new and mysterious place. I saw a young dark Jedi by His in the featured art, and then a crazy ferocious sith creature by Evan Black, and it all seemed so dazzling, so amazing. And now I'm part of it. I have no regrets.

I was typing on a tablet. I guess my tablet doesn't think much of Drig...

Boshuda

Asok

Yeah, he and Drig have never been formally introduced. How awkward!

My friend Randy told me about it when I was drawing my character for our game. I put up pics that were no where near starwars but made it anyway after a second try....I check this site more than Facebook and my Email combined....I live here and now draw almost non stop while at home...go ahead, ask the little lady...it's a sensitive subject

JediScholar

I was a SWAG lurker well before creating my account in 2004 to post this request: http://swagonline.net/node/2076

I found the site while looking for resources and whatnot for my Star Wars D6 RPG campaign (those were the days, sigh...) and have been checking back ever since. I have seriously learned a lot from my association with SWAG - about community, concept art, SW itself, and about taking "fun things" seriously, which is as important a lesson as any as you get older.

I tell everyone I possibly can about SWAGOnline, as long as we're on a related subject :)
If the internet were burning down, I would make sure I grabbed this site as I ran out through the tubes...

SWAG on!

MTFBWY, always.

Baronbob

Baronbob still checks in frequently, Xanamiar. I like to keep an eye on all of my creations.

Baronbob

True Xanamiar....let me rectify that.

What/Who brought you to SWAGONline?

Me, since I created it (with a little help from my friends) back in 2002.

Where did you learn about SWAGOnline?

My brain, before making it a reality (you all are welcome, btw).

And last question...

Do you tell your friends about SWAGOnline?

Yep, if you need proof, well, wow. Since you are reading this I guess that is all the proof you need, huh?

:-)

For those wanting more information, they can always hit the "About" button there at the top of the page, which sums things up pretty well I believe (in my own words no less!).

Hisham

Those were the days when there were weekly IRC chats, which led to the weekly IRC RPGs, with spectators who'd join to watch the game in the IC channel, and comment in the OOC channel.

I owe dredwulf many, many thanks for my involvement here; it was at his recommendation that I applied.

The timing couldn't have been better - I was at a low point artistically, having done no new work from late 2009 to the end of 2010, my computer was so old I couldn't use it for anything beyond simple web-surfing... then after xmas of 2010 I got a shiny new iMac and in January of '11 I applied here.

Getting to do some character concepts for role-players was a *massive* inspiration. I got more into Star Wars in general than I had ever been [despite being a mega fan of the movies], delving into some of the better EU material out there that I never had before. My only, sincerest regret is that I haven't been able to do anywhere near as many requests as I would have liked since joining. This place helped to get me back on my feet artistically, and I am very grateful to be a part of this community. Unfortunately I've just been very busy with a lot of other projects ever since joining.

Asok

I feel you, Grendel. I'm glad the site has played a role in you getting back on the horse, so to speak. I feel like I owe basically everything to this site! People like Hish, Baron Bob, and Daniel Falconer got me started with a load of good advice way back when. I wouldn't be anywhere near the artist I am now if not for this site giving me a reason, an outlet, and a supportive environment. I owe EVERYTHING to SWAG.

grendeljd

There are some really all-around good people on this site, yourself included, Asok!!

But... did you really have to feel me? I'm kind of embarrassed, and things are all awkward between us now.

lol - j/k!!

:D

UnnaturalGas

Brings to mind something I read somewhere showing two stormtroopers shrugging as Vader walks away "I think he said something about having felt his son..." lol

I don't remember how many years ago it was now. They seem to add up pretty quickly.

I was running my own Star Wars game. I used to do all the drawings for my role playing games; players and NPCs. But that's a fairly big workload, and I was just learning the potential tool that is the internet.

So, I did a search; I don't think Google was in general use at the time; but I found some cool Star Wars art to use for NPCs.

I also saw the old request boards...and saw how the requests backed up. My first instinct then was to help out those poor souls who had requests sitting there for several months. To do that, I needed to apply. So I did. And became a Swagger.

It was only a short time however until the Imperial lock down and the slow strangulation of the site.

I checked back less and less often.

Until on a chance check up for the first time in months...I saw activity.

Next thing you know, things are happening again!

I've been kind of a ghost the last couple years; busy with a lot of other things, but I still check back and try to take care of my duties on the council when I can.

* What/Who brought you to SWAGONline? Where did you learn about SWAGOnline?

From a google search just browsing the internet looking for some Star Wars artwork when wonder of wonders and much to my joy, I stumbled across SWAGOnline! I can not remember now what the image was are who the artist might have been, but once I found this site I was just amazed at how much material was on here!!

* Do you tell your friends about SWAGOnline?

Yes, all the time. I love showing my friends just how much remarkable talent is here on SWAG and how I've come to know many of the absolutely marvelous artists here and can call them my friends. How in awe I was to have three of them do requests for me, how lucky I was to have my own work posted here and luckier still to have had the honor to have personal worked with one of them.

And I thank you, Xanamiar for accepting me here to this community and for giving me the chance to express my thanks to you all!

Xanamiar

I don't do the accepting... That's the artists guild team and Eclipse.. I just do the grunt work ...

But we're glad to have you :)
