Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts about wacom tablets? I was thinking of buying one for my little sister, she's sixteen, and she likes to sketch in pencil, but not to color. I though she might be able to use a tablet for coloring. What kind should I look into? Does it come with the software? Can you use them with laptops?
Yes, and yes... and there are a lot of them out there... to cheap and they don't work as well though...
They even have ones now that work as a monitor as well as being able to draw on them. so it's more like actually drawing on paper...
I'd suggest just going to their site and looking at all they have to offer.
Well I've been there but I didn't know if I should go inexpensive or if there was a huge difference in having a larger tablet.

I'll put it this way...
when you are using a tablet, the tablet size is the same as your monitor.. so the left corner of the tablet, becomes the left corner of your monitor... right corner, right... and so on...
So, the bigger the tablet, the better details you can do with it... but the longer the strokes you have to do to do a big line.
Bascially, it really depends on what you are doing with the tablet, on whether or not you want a bigger one... I'd say an artist would want a fairly big wacom, just to be able to do the small details...
Drig and I both started with the smallest tablet, which I think is probably best for beginners to get the feel of it. We both recently upgraded to a larger size, which is awesome, but it takes a little getting used to.
Tablets come with the drivers they need to function on your computer, and can work with a laptop (but I loathe drawing on my laptop - those screens make everything look wonky). If you want some software for coloring lineart, try photoshop or gimp (which do not come with the tablet, generally).
I hope she enjoys her tablet and does some good work!

Wait, so a tablet is some thing you connect to your computer so you can directly draw on photoshop? So its substituting a mouse with a pen?

you connect the Wacom to your computer, which allows you to use a pin, instead of a mouse...
There are also Wacom's that have your monitor projected on them, so you can actually draw on them...
This is what I work with! Lovingly gifted to me by my RPG group as a birthday present last year, actually, and possibly one of the best prezzies I've ever gotten! Came with software as well (though in my case, I did already have Painter on my computer, and though I like the fact that I HAVE Photoshop again, I haven't really gone back to using it...).
My tablet's not HUGE, maybe a couple of steps up from 'smallest'? But I'm pretty satisfied with the level of detail it lets me do, and as was pointed out earlier- any bigger and I'd have a heck of a time getting any smooth lines going, my hand just ain't that steady!
Roz - it's basically the same concept as drawing using a mouse? Just that since you're holding a pen shaped thing instead, you generally get much better control.
